In Year 4, we have had a central theme of water which has been driving our topic enquiry. We started off by looking how water was first transported with a fascinating unit on the Shang Dynasty in China and how they were the first civilisation to use irrigation. The children created wonderful poetry and descriptions based on The Willow Pattern Story which is set in a Chinese garden, followed by making their own ceramic versions of the Willow Pattern plate. We then moved onto looking at the first ever novel: the adventures of Robinson Crusoe, and how he was stranded on a desert island. To start with, the children wrote a news report about when his boat crashed, then the classes made their own maps and how to plot the coordinates. We have finished off the term by rewriting part of the narrative of Robinson Crusoe.
